Language Course Visa (Visa for learning the German Language)

The German Language Course Visa is a type of Study visa. This visa is issued to foreigners seeking to take a German language course in Germany. The course usually lasts from 3 to 12 months. The visa applicant must complete at least 18 hours of lessons every week. Certainly, the course is intensive.

The applicant can extend the visa for up to a year. However, the reason for extending must not be to pursue further education in Germany. The candidate must obtain a German Student Visa to further their education.

There are certain things that you can do with a German Language course visa. On the other hand, there are things that you can not do with this visa.

What can I do with a German Language Course Visa?

  1. Enrol and take an intensive German Language Course.
  2. Request an extension of the visa. The Language course visa can be extended for up to one year. This is counted from the day you arrived in Germany.

What can I NOT do with a Language course visa?

As a German Language Course Visa holder, you can not do any of the following:

  1. Apply for a University admission.
  2. Attend a German University.
  3. You can not change your visa type to get a Student visa or Student applicant visa.
  4. Change the visa into a work permit.
  5. You can not get any paying job or activity.

You cannot continue staying in Germany after your course is finished. The Language course visa is valid for the length of time that you will take the course. This is always less than 1 year. To clarify, it is usually from 3 months to one year. This visa can not be extended for more than 1 year while you are in Germany. Therefore you must return to your home country.

Similarly, if you decide to continue with your studies in Germany after the German course, then you will have to return to your home country and apply for a Student Visa.

The application fee for a Language course visa for Germany is €60. This fee is non-refundable.

What are the Requirments for a German Language Course Visa?

The Language visa is a type of study visa that permits the holder to take a German language course in Germany. Certainly, there are required documents which the applicant must present before being awarded this visa. The required documents for this visa are:

  • A valid passport.
  • Two filled application forms
  • Three copies of your passport’s ID pages
  • Two recent passport-sized photos
  • A receipt that shows that the visa fee has been paid.
  • Proof of accommodation in Germany. For the entire length of stay in Germany.
  • A letter or certificate of confirmation in the language course. Also, this document must show that you will be taking at least 18 hours of lessons every week.
  • Health Insurance. This must cover your entire stay in Germany. Preferably, get this from a German company.

  • All copies of your previous Schengen Visas. (if you’ve ever had them).
  • A letter of leave from your employer. This is applicable if you are an employee. Most importantly, the letter must be signed and stamped.
  • Proof of financial means. You must prove that you can take care of yourself for the length of your stay in Germany. You must be able to show that you have €8,640 for a year in Germany. Provide any of the following documents for this:
    • A letter from your parents. This letter must state that they are willing and able to finance your studies in Germany. Also, they should attach their payslips and bank statements.
    • A letter of commitment from someone who will be willing to host you in Germany. They must show proof that they are financially capable of hosting you, and that they live in Germany.
    • Your Bank or financial statement.
    • A scholarship award or certificate to take the language program.

What happens when I enter Germany?

You must register your address upon your arrival in Germany on a Language course visa. Register your address at any of the Residence Registration offices. However, you have to show:

  • Confirmation of attendance of the course. This must show that you will be having a minimum of 18 hours of lessons every week.
  • Proof of finance for the entire stay in Germany.
  • Lastly, a valid Health Insurance coverage.

Required documents for a Residence permit while on a Language course Visa

Upon arrival in Germany, you may learn that your course will take longer than 90 days (3 months). Therefore, you must apply for a German Residence Permit. Also, you must do this within the first 90 days of your arrival in Germany. But before getting your residence permit, you must provide the following documents to the Local Foreigner’s Authority when you are on a Language course visa in Germany:

  • A valid passport with a stamped valid visa.
  • Proof of attendance of the course.
  • A certificate from the school showing that you are registered for the course.
  • An agreement between the student and the Language school.
  • Proof of accommodation. So, you can provide any of the following:

Recognized Certificates for studying the German language

You receive a certificate after passing any of the following examinations:

  • DSD der KMK: Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz (German language diploma of The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs), Level II
  • TestDaF: Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test of German as a Foreign Language).
  • Goethe Institute Diploma (Accepted by basically all employers)

These certificates are recognized by the German authorities and institutions.
