A Brief History of LMU
In 1472, Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut established LMU Munich in Ingolstadt. It is Germany’s sixth-oldest university which is consistent in operation. Eventually, King Maximilian, I of Bavaria moved the institution in 1800 due to threats from the French. Consequently, he then relocated it to Munich in 1826. King Maximilian I of Bavaria named the university Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat in 1802. The university had papal approval and its first rector was Christopher Mendel of Steinfels.
In the era of German humanism, the university’s intellectuals included names such as Conrad Celtes and Petrus Apianus. Johann Eck the theologian also taught at the University. Also, the Jesuits influenced the university and it became one of the centres of counter-Reformation since 1549-1773. At the end of the 18th Century, Petrus Canisius worked as the rector of the university. Consequently, In the second half of the 19th century, the University rose to great supremacy in the European scientific community. Also, from 1903, women were allowed to study at Bavarian universities, and by 1918, the female percentage of students at LMU was 18.
The Growth of the University
The first woman in Germany to earn the Habilitation (higher doctorate) at LMU was Adele Hartmann. Aso, the university has continued to be one of the world’s leading universities. During the Weimar Republic, a time when there were professors like Wilhelm Rontgen, Wilhelm Wien, Richard Wilstatter. And also, professors like Arnold Sommerfeld, and Ferdinand Sauerbruch, the University was on its wings and has continued flying ever since. As a result, between 1943-1945 during the Third Reich academic freedom curtailed severely. Meanwhile, from 1945 to the present the University has continued to be one of the leading universities in the west of Germany. Specifically, it has been the top in the post-reunification era and during the cold war.

The steps taken to complete the application process depends on the qualifications you have already, your nationality, the language course, and the admission regulations for your chosen degree program. Before you prepare your application, check that you fulfill all the requirements for studying at LMU. You’ll find the list of the general requirements for undertaking a bachelor, master’s, or doctoral degree program below as well as for courses ending with a state examination. For courses that have their admission restriction, or courses that require aptitude assessment, pre-registration, or academic advising and orientation.
The German programs have pre-registration or academic advising or orientation. The master’s program and undergraduate degree program has an aptitude test. For international students, a German student visa is required, which might be very complex to get. Generally, an entry visa for study purposes is issued for three months. You’ll be required to register for a residence permit after arriving in Munich and before your entry visa expires.
International applicants who wish to study at LMU would need to submit their applications to the international office. The international office is responsible for processing applications. To apply for admission into the university, download the form, fill it and submit it before the deadline alongside all the required documents. Applications are submitted by post and not by email.

STUDENT LIFE at LMU
Students of LMU apart from academics are open to entertaining and acquiring other skills. There are music, film, art and all varieties of cultural events. So it is easy to find something you love for a discounted student price. There’s a Culture Bureau for all cultural events. There are student groups, students could also go out at a flea market, visit some historical sites, go swimming or surfing in the Eisbach, and more. There’s no shortage of festivals in Munich and you’ll have many chances to celebrate with your new friends.
Students are also involved in sports activities, attending the Olympics, and other competitions. Meanwhile, those interested in getting a job to top their bank accounts need to consult official offices that manage the work done by international visitors. In Munich, this is the international office Auslanderbehorde at the kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVT). You can also visit the website for LMU’s Student Career Service. There’s a law that doesn’t allow students to work without a work permit. You can easily lose your residence permit and be sent home if you are caught breaking the law.
At the beginning of the winter semester, it is difficult to find housing in Munich that is in the months of September, October, and November. Also, the majority of their students live in private rooms, flat-shares, or apartments. Only about 12% live in student residences. Moreover, rooms in student houses cost 250-390€. Rental cost for private housing in Munich are high, rooms in apartments easily cost between 450-800€ depending on the location and amenities. Incoming students without student accommodation are advised to begin the search for accommodation as early as possible. Youth hostels are recommended for short stays. Cheap hostels and hotels get fully booked quickly, especially in mid-September to the beginning of October. Ludwig Maximilian Universitat has an outstanding Alumni Firstly, the anti-Nazi resistance white Rose was based in this institute. Pope Benedict XVI was a student and a professor at LMU Munich. Max Planck, the founder of Quantum Theory and Nobel laureate in physics in 1918 was an alumnus of the University. Also, Pakistani Philosopher and poet Sir Muhamad, Iqbal, regarded as the “Poet of the East” and “the thinker of Pakistan” earned his Ph.D. degree from LMU Munich in 1908. Working under the supervision of Friedrich Hommel, Iqbal disseminated his doctoral thesis in 1908, entitled The development of Metaphysics in Persia.
Founders of Quantum mechanics such as Werner Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli, and others were correlated with the Academy. Recently, the building of physical chemistry was named after Gerhard Ertl the laureate in chemistry. This was in a bit to honor the laureate, who worked as a professor at the University of Munich from 1973 to 1986, the building of physical chemistry was named after him.
